What is a face massage tool?

Girl using a Jade Face RollerA face massage roller is a little gadget that looks similar to a tiny rolling pin, or even a paint roller (depending on how many glasses of wine you’ve had!).

Some face massage rollers have two ends: one with a large-sized stone, intended for broad strokes on larger and flatter areas of the face( forehead, jawline, cheeks, and neck) – and one with a smaller stone, for reaching delicate parts of your face (under the eyes and the corners of your nose).

While a massage roller for your face is typically made of Jade or Rose Quartz gemstones, you’ll also find rollers made of tourmaline, amethyst, obsidian, and metal.

With the “natural” beauty industry on the rise and more consumers shying away from chemicals, it’s crystal clear why crystals in the form of face rollers are taking the skincare industry by storm! Keep reading…

Do face rollers really work?

To be honest, it’s not really magic. You guessed it: massage alone has a ton of benefits for the body from reducing stress and releasing tension, to improving blood circulation and draining fluid.Just like a full body massage, face massage has similar paybacks. Facial massage techniques aid in lymph fluid elimination, making the cheekbones and jawline look more sculpted.

According to a study by researchers in Japan, facial massaging using a roller can increase skin blood flow for more than 10 minutes after the massage. Long-term facial massage can also improve vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels). Case in point, scientists from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Tokyo Healthcare University, conducted a series of short-term experiments. They discovered that even a five-minute massage with a face roller could significantly improve facial skin blood flow up to 25%. Amazing, isn’t it?

benefits of face massage roller

Here are five facial massage roller benefits:

1.Improves blood circulation in the face, resulting in a brighter and healthy skin glow.

2. Helps with stuffy sinuses (although the research is still in the early stages).

3. Decreases puffiness like under-eye bags by stimulating lymphatic drainage.

4. Helps your skin better absorb serums and moisturizers, delivering skin products deeper into your skin.

5. Gives your skin a healthy glow.

What a face massage roller CANNOT do for your face

Do facial Rollers actually do anything?Forget unicorns, dragons, and the Loch Ness Monster. One of the biggest myths around is that using a face massage roller will slim your face.

The bottom line is that the only way to truly naturally slim down or lose weight from any part of your body, the face included, is through nutrition and exercise. Sure, the de-puffing potential of the facial roller can create the illusion of a slimmer face, but this result is about as fleeting as morning dew. The good news is that your complexion will still benefit from using a face massage roller.

How much will I have to pay for a face massage roller?

When it comes to face rollers, the options are endless – and so are the price tag variations.

You can choose a budget hand-held roller from $20 upwards, or pick a tool enhanced with sonic technology, from $40 upwards. If you have the loot to spare, you can even buy yourself a 4-karat-gold-infused sculpting bar that retails at about $200!

It is still a far cry from one of the most expensive face rollers on the market. Meet Refa– a Japanese face massage roller that incorporates micro-current technology that sends low-level electrical currents into your skin, and comes with a price tag of $330.

Face Rolling Bootcamp: How to do it correctly

When it comes to any beauty gadgets, the most important thing is to first, do no harm.

While the technology behind facial rollers has significantly advanced in recent years, to the point

where there are options tailored for usage, and result preferences, there is

still room for error. Many women incorrectly use face rollers, causing skin irritation, and breaking delicate capillaries. So, what is the solution? You’re about to find out, follow these:

how to use a facial roller?

1.
Be cautious: Do not use facial rollers if you’ve recently had botox or any kind of fillers on your face. Also, avoid performing roller massaging on broken or inflamed skin.

2. Start with a clean canvas: Cleanse your skin and apply facial oil, serum, or moisturizer with lots of slip. If you don’t have lubrication, the face massage roller can pull or tug the skin, which may contribute to wrinkles.

3. Be gentle: As health and beauty expert Paula Begoun puts it – if you can see your skin move that means you’re being too aggressive with the roller. Begoun warns pulling and tugging at your skin’s elastin can lead to sagging, which is exactly what you’re trying to avoid!

4. Work against gravity: Always roll your roller tool upwards and outwards (not back and forth) on both sides of your face, never pushing your skin downwards.

5. Don’t overdo it: While you can repeat up to five upward rolls in each area, don’t over exceed this amount.

6. It’s in the wrist: Always hold your facial massage roller with a 10 to 45-degree angle, as flat as you can against your skin. This prevents you from being able to apply too much pressure and friction on your skin.

7. Trust your body: While some redness can be expected while using a facial roller, your skin should never feel ‘burnt’ or sore. If it does, you’re likely being too rough.

8. Remember the neck area: Often we forget that the neck area also deserves some pampering. Your neck serves as an important lymphatic drainage pathway so give it a little TLC.

9. Be mindful of time: Using a face roller for 10 minutes should be plenty. And always stop if it starts to hurt.

10. Be consistent: Here’s the big secret when it comes to face massage tools – you won’t see immediate results. It takes several weeks before you’ll notice “real” improvements. And you’ll need to use a face roller two to three times weekly, for 10 minutes a stint, for best results.

11. Clean your facial roller properly after use: Use a gentle face wash or soap to kill bacteria after each use. Then you should rinse the tool thoroughly in lukewarm water, before laying the roller horizontally to dry.

And drum roll…

We now know that facial roller massage is an effective and fun way to tone and add to our skincare repertoire. That’s because these tools are multi-faceted and can address several skin issues and concerns all in one go.

Using a face massage roller can stimulate blood flow, which can make your skin look brighter and feel firmer. Some studies suggest that using this tool may even help clear the sinuses. There are loads of facial rollers to choose from, and all of them have their boons and banes. Just make sure to know the signs of fake stones and clean your roller regularly.
